OX THE VERGE OF TEARS. LODGED IX T POLICE CELL. EXCITEMENT aIHrOTORUA. 1 ROTORUA, SaturdayThe police in charge of Rua and ether prisoners arrived in Rotorua at 5,30 last evening. A great crowd thronged the main thoroughfares leading to the Police Station. A lookout stationed on the Fire Brigade’s tower gave notice of their approach, and it was the signal for a determined rush, to see the prisoners. The crowd surged round tne entrance to the station, and it was with difficulty held back] The prisoners, handcuffed in pairs, were disembarked from a brake, and passed through a strong cordon into the station yard and to the watchlu use. They were subjected to careful search, and were then taken in charge by Sergt. Cummings, and placed in the cells, Rua and his son occupying one cell, and Awahoumona, Tione Maka, Pukopuke Karana, and ether prisoners another cell. BEFORE THE COURT. CHARGES AGAINGT 'MAORIS. ASSAULT AND OBSTRUCTION. REMANDED TO AUCKLAND. ROTORUA, Saturday. The Court proceedings opened at 10.30 a.m., when a great crowd had gathered. Accommodation was.limited, and every corner of the building was crammed with spectators. Mr. Dyer, S.M., occupied the bench. Rua, being already under sentence, was not called. The charges against him will be preferred later. Before the Court opened the prisoners were marched in under a strong guard, and took their places near the dock, silent and anxious. Tioke Hakai was first charged. Sergeant Cummings applied for a remand to the i7tli irist., and opposed bail being given. Constable- Neil,; -of Rotorua/, intety preted. In all the cases the same application -was made, and the warrants wer* made out on Auckland prison, to wbicl* destination the prisoners will' be conveyed to-morrow. During the proceedings the prisoners never spoke except a single word in answer to the charge. Tioke Hakai is charged with having' assaulted Michael -Fahey, a constable, in the execution of his duty.

The charges against Whatu Hua are that he did assault James Sinclair Williamson, and did obstruct the said Constable Williamson in the execution of his duty. Maka Hanuera is charged that he assaulted Constable James Sinjclaiir Williamson, and did obstruct the said Constable Williamson in the execution of his duty.

Puke Puke Kanana is charged that he did assault Constable Arthur Skinner by pointing a loaded rifle at his head.

Awa Horomona is charged that h© did obstruct Michael Fahey in the execution of his duty, and did assault the said Michael Fahey, etc.

THE INQUEST ADJOURNED. An inquest was opened on the twt>Maoris who were killed. Toko Rua andL| y Maipa Brewster. The surgeon gave evidence that the cause of the deatK of Toko Rua was hemorrhage following an extensive bullet wound and that Maipa Brewster’s death was caused by a bullet. After taking medical evidence, the inquest was adjourned till Wednesday, the 10th inst., on the application of Sergeant Cummings.
