CONFISCATED LIQUOR.
PROBABLE WINDFALL FOR HOSPITAL. At the raid on the Mansion House, Kawau Island, the liquor seized consisted of an 18 gal. cask of ale, 51 pint bottle an deight quart bottles of ale, seven bottles of port wine, three of brandy, two of ruin, four of schnapps, one of sherry, and a small quantity of whisky. After the hearing of the case to-day, in which defendant was convicted, when Sub-Inspector Mcllveney requested a magisterial order for the confiscation of the liquor, Mr. J. R. Reed, K.C. (for defendant), 'asked that the liquor like sherry, brandy, etc., obviously used in cooking for trifles, etc., be returned, but the reply was that the law made no provision therefore. Mr. F. V. Fraser, S.M., remarked that it would be a pity to 'destroy such a quantity of very good liquor, and asked if provision could not be made to have it handed over to the hospital. The Sub-Inspector stated that he would convey his Worship’s recommendation to that effect to the officers of the Department which dealt with confiscated liquors. Hitherto, he said, it had since 1909 or 1910 been customary to destroy such liquor, or to have it sold at auction.
