Regarding criticism of the Maheno's return, the Government has issued the following statement: —■ "Both hospital ships were placed unreservedly at the disposal of the Imperial Government. When the Malieno, returning, arrived at M'alta, the New Zealand Government telegraphed that they hoped the vessl would remain in the Mediterranean. The Imperial Government replied that it was desirable she should proceed to New Zealand to relieve congestion in the hospitals.
