WORKINO ON SUNDAY.
CHINAMAN CONVICTED. jk MAGISTRATE 'S COMMENTS. HAMILTON, Jan. 10. When a Chinaman namxl Wong Hop appeared before Mr. E. Eawson, S.M., at Hamilton to-day, charged with working at his calling by digging potatoes within sight of a public road on a recent Sunday, His Worship remarked that the statute under which the prosecution was laid was somewhat ridiculous. It apparently did not matter if a man worked on a Sunday wit-bin sight of a public road so long as he was not following his usual week-day occupation. He could not understand people complaining, as they had apparently dene in this case, of a man digging potatoes on the Sabbath. It usually happened that Chinamen were the victims of charges of tins description. However, he must administer the law as vie found it. Defendant would be convicted and ordered to pay the costs. PRICE OF FLOUR. MASTERTON, Jan. 10. Masterton bakers were informed t* day of a further rise in the price ot flour of ten shillings per ton. There is no apparent reason for the increase, and no satisfactory explanation can be given by the millers' representative. One representative who visited Masterton recently, when remonstrated with in regard to the increased price, said: "Oh. well, we •lave not much flour on hand; you can please yourself whether you take it or not." One Masterton baker has already communicated with the PrimeMinister in regard to the matter.
