GIFTS FOR OUR SOLDIERS.
Knowing that many thousands of pounds’ worth of goods sent to soldiers at the front from New Zealand •have gone astray and have never reached those to whom they were addressed, it will be pleasant to learn that the first parcel sent by the Taihape 'Women’s Working Club did reach its proper destination and that the Secretary, Miss Gilbert, has received official acknowledgement from the officer commanding the Gift Goods Department at Alexandria. The letter is dated from Alexandria, 13th October, 1915, and is wmrded as follows: “I have to advise you that I have received per post five parcels of gifts from your Guild. These will bo forwarded at the first opportunity to the Officer Commanding the Wellington Infantry Battalion for distribution as directed.” It is gratifying to all concerned to know that amidst all the confusion and loss our Taihape lads will, or have, received the presents towards which our townspeople have generously contributed. As there seems to be some misunderstanding about the position and functions of the Women’s Working Club, many believing that since it became a branch of the New Zealand British Red Cross it has ceased making up and sending gifts to our men in the trenches. That is not the case; the Club certainly does hospital work, but it also continues sending the gifts of tobacco, clothing, sweets, and many other things so eagerly looked forward to by the men, just as before, and they will be grateful for contributions towards the good work.
