The workmen have been employed chiefly in cleaning water channels and grass off footpaths. Kaka Road, from Railway Bridge to Ruru Road, has been cleaned; also two slips that occurred during recent ruins have been attended to. The extension of drainage sewer in Birch’s Road to Mr. Aldridge’s property has been completed. Owing to the breakdown to the pump, the water in the reservoir is down on one side to two feet three inches and the other side is empty. I have been saving the water as much as possible by using the old stream on the hill to supply the mains in the daytime from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. I have now found it necessary to close the reservoir at night; by so doing three inches is saved. In case of fire taking place, while there is this shortage of water, I have a man on .duty at the reservoir every night from 10 p.m. to 5 p.m. Cr. Bennett: It reveals a very bad state of affairs, your Worship. The Mayor: How long will the pump be out of action? The Foreman: Until to-morrow afternoon. On the recommendation of the Works Committee the report was adopted. Cr. Bennett asked if the putting up of the second pump could not be pushed forward rapidly. It would bo half-way into February before wo could expect any benefit and lie thought some special effort should be made to get the pump rigged up, and then one pump could supply daily requirements direct from the river and the other could be used at night. The Electrical Engineer said lie had had to take his staff from town to put the pump in. The low pressure pump could be put down near the river if he could get men. The water could then be pumped from the river when the water was clean. He would want the help of men at present working on the roads. The Mayor said if the Engineer would say when he wanted the men he would get them. MONTHLY MEETINGS. At the conclusion of the meeting Cr. Joblin said the Council could do all the business if they met once a month. The Mayor and Cr. Bennett said they wore of the same opinion. Cr. Joblin then intimated that lie would put. in notice of motion to that effect.
