CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The local trains running north of Taihape seem to be run for the special convenience of the flotsam and jetsam of this district, and the women and children and other respectable citizens have to make shift as best they can. Some of the scenes on these trains begger description and reflect little credit on this district. Last week I witnessd a little scene that, despite its humourous side, has au uglier one. The 2nd-class non-smok-ing carriage -was full, at least, th seating accommodation was—chiefly owing to a big fat Maori lying full length and snoring. At Turangarere many school children entered the carriage on their way home. They had to stand as the Maori was not to be awakened. They put him up for auction for the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund the self-styled auctioneer describing him as a fat pig and quite docile when full! In the same carriage were a honeymoon couple (they were quite oblivious of all ills), also several women and children who found their travelling quite nauseating. The guard was as oblivious as the honeymooners. In all decency and joking apart this topsy-turveydom of British fairness needs looking into. Taihape’s hoary past is past—let’s end this horrible nightmare on our trains and give decency a chance to air itself and o-row more abundantly.—l am, ete ° ' ONLOOKER.
