SOLDIERS' ROOM.
CONTRIBUTIONS SOLICITED. The Mayoress of Taihape, Mrs A. L. Arrows™ itb, has received tihe following communication from the Soldiers’ Room Committee in Wellington: “Some little time ago a Committee, under the patronage of Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, and with Mrs W. F. Massey as President, was formed in Wellington for the purpose of providing a Soldiers’ Room in town to bo made use of by the members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in camp at TrentJham. The Sydney Street Schoolroom has been rented for an indefinite period, and here soldiers on leave may read, write, play games, secure light refreshments, and have hot bathes. This room was opened on 30th July and is being well patronised by the soldiers. Further developments may take place as the need arises and as the opportunity occurs. The ladies of Wellington have responded most generously to this call, and they personally supervise and direct all the activities of the movement. But, as the room will be kept open for the duration of the war, and will entail continual expenditure of money, time and service, my Committee calls upon all the women of the Dominion to help on this most necessary and important work. Will you, therefore, do what you can to make this movement known amongst the women of your district and forward to the Executive of Mrs Massey’s Committee whatever contributions you may be able to collect? We feel that this work must deeply interest the wives and mothers of the
men in camp and appeal to every woman who has the welfare of our soldiers at heart. “We naturally leave the details of organisation to yourself and hope for a favourable reply. Contributions may be sent to Mrs Henry Hall, hon. treasurer Soldiers’ Rtfom Fund, 70 Hill St., Wellington.—l have the honour to be yours very truly.
ANNIE G. SALMOND, Hon. Sec. Soldiers’ Room Committee.”
There is no doubt tfhat the room is proving of great benefit to the men encamped at Trentham, and the Committee are to be congratulated on the results of their efforts. Mrs Arrowsmith is prepared to receive any donations to further the projects.
