A RED CROSS APPEAL.
TELEGRAM FROM LORD LIVER POOL. RECEIVED BY THE MAYOR.
The Mayor has received the following telegram from His Excellency the Governor, Lord Liverpool: *
"Firstly: I have received a telegram from tlhe Marquis of Lansdowne with the concurrence of their Majesties the King and Queen, and of her Majesty Queen Alexandra., suggesting that October 21st shall be appointed as a day for an appeal throughout the Empire by street and other collections for the purpose of meeting the growing demand for funds for Red Cross requirements both in France and tfhe Near East. Secondly: Contributions received from this appeal are to be devoted to relieving the sufferings of our sick and wounded soldiers and sailors wherever they may be located. Thirdly: I am publishing to-morrow in the Press details of the telegram and it is hopedthat you wall be able to lend your assistance. Fourthly: Should brandies of the Order of St. John exist in your locality it is suggested that you might arrange to co-operate with them. Fifthly: The appeal is entirely for money and not for goods in kind." With reference to the above telegram, I have consulted tihe Patriotic Committee, and it is proposed to confer with the Carnival Committee, with a view to arranging to set apart one day for the collection of funds for the Red Cross requirements of the Allies. It is thought that the date mentioned in his Excellency's telegram being a Thursday, and a jaalf-holiday, is not suitable to this town, and it is therefore, proposed to set apart the following Saturday. I feel confident that all will gladly sink the Carnival for one day and unite in responding to His Excellence's appeal in a manner worthy of the great object and creditable to the district. A. L. ARROWSMITH.
