CARNIVAL NOTES.

j. (BY THE 0.5.) There has been n very vigorous canvass of the district, during the past week by the various Queen Candidates* Committees, and a fair amount of bullion has been gathered. Some of the enthusiasts have extended their operations far afield, and in that respect they have shown considerable wisdom. The contest is still very open, and as yet no favourite has been established. The concert and dance held at Eangiwaea last night was a huge success, the hall being crowded. Bidding was brisk and spirited for the OT'allaghan banner, and a sum of over £2OO was raised.

The friends and supporters of Miss Forde are holding a masked and domino ball at Mataroa ou Tuesdav, the 26th inst.

On Monday next a social and dance will be held at Moawhango to assist the candidature of Miss Whenuaroa. A fine concert programme has been arranged, and everything points to the function being a big success. A dance will be held in the Town Hall this evening in favour of Miss Whenuaroa \s candidature.

In connection with one of the sections donated by Mr. D. Wilkie, senr the Egmont Box Co. have, I intimated their intention of sufficient material to build a f lve * roou *_ ed house.
