The Germans tried to re-capture Tahure Butte by three terrific onslaughts. The most desperate was on Wednesday night and was repulsed with enormous loss. There were piles of dead outside the defence works. Prisoners state that the general staff [had ordered the re-capture of Hill 199 at any cost.
