The bulk of You Eiehhorn’s artillery and infantry after terrible losses halted at Yilna. Even cavalry and mo-tor-cyclists were supplied with mach-ine-guns. General Russky, by a systematic scheme of rearguard action, slowed up the Germans, and the advance on the Dvina has now been reduced to a costly series of attacks upon the trenches. There is every sign of an early winter. The country is already swept by cold, raw winds. RETREAT FROM VILNA. SITUATION NOW GOOD. PARIS, Sept. 22. M. Madand, a military correspondent, says that the Russians at Yilna escaped encirclement. The retreat is being carried out under favourable conditions.
