' A STREET CAVES IN. many injured and dead. r 1 (Reed 8.50 a.m.) r KBW YORK, Sept. 22. * Workmen, exploding dynamite to femove rocks in city subway construction, caused pavements and sidewalks to cave in, burying a street car with scores of women and men proceeding to their work. Heavy flows of watefc* and gag threatened to drown or suffocate the imprisoned passengers, but the police and firemen entered a hole • and rescued seventy persons, badly injured from tlhe partly-buried car. The Tuscania has arrived with 409 Surviovrs from the Greek steamer 'Athenia, which was abandoned on fire at sea. The crew fought the fire for 36 hours, assisted by some of the passengers. S.O.S. calls brought the Tuscania, who sent a fire fighting partjy aboard, but they wer e unable to get the flames under control, and the captain decided to abandon the ship.
