CARNIVAL NOTES.
(BY THE 0.5.) ' It Is really surprising the difference of opinion that exists as refeards the chances of the respective candidates. In tjhe space of a couple of hours yesterday each and every aspirant for Queenly honours was given to me . as an "absolute certainty." "Are we downhearted?" queried one of the principal supporters of Miss Carpenter to me this morning. "Not a bit of it," he replied. "Let 'em all come!" And he strode forth into the bright atmosphere in quest of further bullion with a grit and determination tihat w.oodd! have frightened seven bells out a whole battalion of Bavarian sauer-, krauters. j
! Just as a slight reminder that Utiku is still on the map the good folk of rthat township have decided to hold a big patriotic concert .en Thursday evening next, the 23rd inst, and tjhe proceeds therefrom will go to assist their representative:, Mrs G:p.christ There are many who hold the opinion that this popular lady will just about win. She has a strong and vigorous committee behind |her and quite a number of them have already earned considerable distinction as expert bullion gatherers. Donations in kind are rolling in fast and during the last couple of days there has happened ailong an offer of a sectji.cn of land, right in the heart of Wanganui, value £3OO, a new Broadwood Pianolo, value £175, a raceohrse (warranted to win the fh'st time of asking, and incidentally pay a big dividend), a Jersey cow, t|he very latest Edison phone\graph, a ■. But that will do for the present.
The Entertainment Committee are busy arranging a rattling good concert programme. So the Utiku people may confidently look forward to an enjoyable time on Thursday evening next.
The "Red Cross" comm|ittee are still battling away—nothing seems to damp their partiotic ardour —and they have decided to hold a big scoial and dance in tjhe Town Hall on Friday evening next. The famous ball given by the Duchess of Richmond at Brussels just a hundred years ago, will b e as nothing to it, so Mr Dunbar informs me, and the only thing that is troubling l-.is committee just now is the matter of accommodation for the anticipated crowd. The friends of Miss Whenuarpa are very mucjh in the running, and they have resolved to hold a social and dance in the "Three Stars" hall on Saturday evening, next. No effort or expense will be spared to make the function a success, and a most enoyable time is promised.
Mr H. O'Cailaghan, who is si vly bubbling over with patriotic fervour, has hit upon a very ingenious method of raising bullion to assist his candidate. His daughter. Miss Lorna O'CaMaghan, lias made a very handsome silken banner, and every person contributing on e pound or more will have his cr her name inscribed thereon. There will be no limit, of courso, ot the donations, and the person subscribing the largest amount between now and the closing of the Carnival, will become the proud possessor of the piece of bunting I understand there are some forty names ailready on the banner, and Mr O'CaJllaghan hopes to obtain at least a thousand before the Carnival closes. At present Mr R. Cleaver leads for the ownership with 'a tally of £IOO. All names will be given .in next issue.
| I should like to remind aM and sun-; 'dry tihat the garden party to assist j"Our Boys" candidate, w'ill he held at ■Mrs R- W. Smith's residence on 'Thursday afternoon. To-night Mataroa will be en fete 'the occasion being a big concert mid 'dance to assist the candidature of Miss Forde. Tickets for the function are selling like hot cakes, and the gathering promises to be a record on I *. The general committee will meet on Tuesday next, the 28th inst. It was originally decided to assemble to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, but tjhe executive decided that the various competing candidates should be represented by three delegates, and an opportunity of deleting same, it-was resolved to defer the meeting till the 25th inst. Owing to the illness of Instructor .Knight, there will be no tango dancing ] classes until further notice.
