CARNIVAL NOTES.
Matters in connection with the Carnival advanced another stage last night. Everything is progressing in a very satisfactory manner, and the contest will b. ; in full swing on Saturday next.
A meeting will be held at Utiku this (evening to select a candidate for Utiku, Wainui, Moawhango, Pukeokahu and Taoroa districts, and the representative of these combined districts will take a power of beating. % A number of the executive are visiting Mangaweka to-day fQt the purpose of arranging for the nomination of a Queen from that town. It is considered practically cjertain that Mangaweka will join us in the contest and nominate a representative. Such hieing the case we aji’e in for a lively time and the fight is going to be a big one. Miss Ford’s committee will meet at Mataroa this evening for the purpose
of mapping out a plan of campaign. T|he writer has been ’invited to attend the gathering and assist in the formulating of plans and strategical movements. Miss Ford is going to receive substantial baching,'and her many friend s will leave no bouldeir undisturbed to place her on top of the poll. No favourite has .been established as yet and It would take a very shrewd individual to aitfieinpjt} to p&chj ’the winner. One thing Is certain —they are all triers.
The supporters of tjhe Red Cross candidate, Miss Carpenter, have arranged a Monster Social and Dance in the Town Hall for to-morrow (Friday evening). An elaborate programme has been drawn up, and the function prom, ises to be one of the most successful ever held in the district. Miss Carpenter’s secretary, Mr S. Dunbar, has everything we(U in hand, and he assures me that patrons will have the time of their lives. It was found that the Railway Social Hall would be altogether too small to accommodate the big crowd expected 1 , hence the committee deciding on the Town Hall. The Social will commence sharp at 8 p.m. The big patriotic concert for the combined candidates will be held in the Town Hall on Thursday next, the 23rd f inst. A fine array of musical and elocutionary talent has, I am told, been secured, and th'e entertainment gives every evidence of being a high!} successful one.
