JEWS HOPE FOR JUSTICE.
AS OUTCOME OP THE WAR. FIGHTING FOR PALESTINE. A VILE MYTH SHATTERED. RABBI GOLDSTEIN'/, NEW YEAH WISH LA .\ D, Tli u rsday. Yesterday marked th e opening of fjhe Jewish New Year, and was the occasion of special services at the Jewish Synagogue, where a very fin e address was delivered hy Rabbi Goldstein. First dealing with the purpose of the day they celebrated, the Rabb,j said it was a da,|y of memorial, which should ba set apart for contemplation of the higher things of life. God had given them life; how to ennoble that life should ba their most serious concern. On this day of memorial ile! them meditate and realise that ! the best w r ay to ensure a beautifu'l life was to mak e it one of sacrifice for brother men.- In wishing them a. hearty New Year, he prayed that the coming new year migiat bring peac 3 for them and all who were suffering in consequence of this great world-war. Many hearthstones were cold, many chairs empty, and would never o». refilled. The horrors of w ; ar were being brought hom e t 0 ever,y household. They prayed to God, the Father of aIJL to comfort and wipe the tears or sorrow from the face of friend and foe alike. Need h e remind them of the suffering of their ccM-elig/ionists /in Russia and Poland. They had read of the martyrdom cf the Jews in the Middle Ages. It faded into insignificance compared with tihe martyrdom of their co-reli-gionists in Poland. They knew of the ! illustration of the pitcher; whether the stone feiil upon the pitcher or the pitcher upon the stone, it was wo a to the pitcher. And so with the Jews in Poland. The last "Jewish Chronicle," published on July 23, contained the most harrowing stories. If their hearts had bled before, they must break now, for thousands of men and women had been driven from their ! homes to die lingering deaths under the most terrible circumstances. "My friends." proceeded the Rabbi, "I am speaking to you seriously. One and all, we mmx be prepared to give, and give, and go en [giving. I say that our meeting here this day to ask God's blessing would be a sham and a mockery. Something will have to be done, and f.r.om what .1 know of the fine Jewish spirit (here in Auckland, I am sur e that any movement started by the leaders of our congregation will be cheerfully res- \ ponded to by all. If in the past we have done well, we shall in the future do still better." "Jewrjy," continued th e Rabbi, "is passing through the most serious stage of many ages. Our brotjhers are acquitting themselves valorously on every battlefield. They are shattering for ever the vil e myth that the Jew is a coward and knows not how to fight. Our j co-religionists are proving themselves J in every country, distflajjring chivalry
and bravery, and cheerful.y giving their live s to tjae cause of freedom. What has the anti-Semite to say now? W;e hope that, as the outcome of this war, ana our part in.it, direct benefits will accrue to our race.. Just as Belgium and oilier small countries fight for self-government and existence, so selves at last a home of their own in Palestine. We may not all wish'to go leave everything to make their (homes in the land of their fathers. We pray fervently that peace will inaugurate out th e whole world. Let us pray for leaders who will guide us in this great thouglht. Other nations cry out fcr justice. Let us hope that the time has arrived when justice will be meted out to the Jews. Let us hope that the Jew s also will be given a place under .th e sun —the place where tihe heroes time that the Jew was regarded as something mora than a mOne,y-maker. In this great war he is proving himself such. Let u s pray for the consummation cf our hopes." •' The service, which was a most impressive one. included a special prayer fcr the success of the Allies.
