TAIHAPE CARNIVAL COMMITTEE
A mooting of the General Carniva’ Committee was held in the Supper Room at the Town Hall last night. Present: Messrs, W. McLennan (chan man), Mercer, Peyton, A. E. Wakeman, Dymock, P. E. Wakeman, Train, Currie, Thurston, Downing, Fathei Connolly, Bray, Wrightson, Lyall, and other?. The following were added ro the Committee: Messrs. W. Crawford, W. Watson, C. Sullivan, S. Dunbar, F. Ward, Sergeant-Major Tucker, Lieutenant H. Johnson, 11. O’Callaghan, I'.
Griffin, J. McTaggart. Apologies were tendered for the unavoidable absence of Messrs. D. Neagle, F. McLaughlan, Absolum, and Drayton.. The chairman reported that several members of the Committee had attended the function at Mataroa on Friday night, and also a meeting there an Monday night. The question of the nomination: of a Queen had been discussed and the meeting had marked the commencement of the Carnival movement at Mataroa. Mr. Peyton, said that the Mataroa Committee gave them a welcome and seemed to be in favour of supporting the Carnival, amf it had been decided to hold a meeting at Mataroa on Friday night. Mr. O’Callaghan asked whether the Committee would’ Be willjng to dV a innate the Carnival file- Taihape— Mimgnweka CarnivaS, in view of the fact that Mangavreka would' in all probability run a candidate-..
The chairman stated that the Committee had no wish to retain all flic credit for Taihape. They would be willing to call it the Main Trunk Carnival, or anything- else, so long as they wore able to raise money for the brave fellows who were loyally fighting at the front. Mr. Mercer mentioned that the Huntervillo Carnival Committee had been successful in securing- the service's of Dr. Martin to give his interesting lecture in aid of the Carnival. He would suggest that Dr. Martin bo written to, inviting him to come to TaMiape at n later date, to deliver an address at the Town Hall in aid of this Car nival.
This was unanimously decided upon. Mr. Crawford suggested that permission be secured from the- Borough Council to erect letter-boxes in various parts of the town, where people mighr place their ballot-papers without the necessity of going to one definite place. This had been done in Dunedin and had proved very effective.—The suggestion was taken up and a communication is to be sent to the Council. Mr. A. James- moved that a resolution be forwarded to the Hon. Mr. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, similar in wording to that recently sent to the Prime Minister, advocating that temporary legislation should i,c passed, in ord’er that raffles and art unions should be legalised when organised by accredited patriotic societies. The motion was carried unanimously. The meeting cliosed with a vote ?f thanks to the chair.
