"some particularly cheap and good linea in school boots both for boys ana girls. Among those who have recently fallen on G-allipoli Peninsula is Mr Gordon Aline Webber, brother to Mrs Lionel Dixon, of Taihape. Mr Webber, befor e enlisting, was a Civil engineer at In-vei-cargill. It is needless to sa|y that Mrs Dixon will bav e the deepest sympathy of almost every resident of this district.

The recent heavy fighting in the Dardanelles has led to a boom in recruiting in the Wanganui district. Within the last week over 40 have been selected for active service, and many others are awaiting examination. It is estimated that close on 1,000 have left the district since the war started, states a Press Association telegram.

Tiie German steamer Walkure, which was sunk by the Germans during their bombardment of Papeete, was to have been, sold by auction, but tha sale has been postponed. Resting on an even keel in about nine fathoms of water, it is anticipated that the. Walkure can be raised with very little difficulty. The masts, funnel, and bridge are showing out of the water.

An idea of the spirit with which fhe German advance is regarded in Russia is given by a letter received in Auckland from an English lady who has resided in Russia for about ten years. She is governess in the family of one of the very high officials in PetrograC, and writing to her sister she says that the Russians are preparing Petrogratf to withstand a siege, and are perfectly confident of being ablte to beat off* tlieGermans. They are daily receiving from Japan enormous quantities of ammunition and huge guns, larger than any the Germans can possibly take for •the" siege. .. .

A doctor in one of the large iiosp--tals in England, writing to a relative

in Napier, says, when referring to tne war, "You people out there will get : pleasant surprise soon."

j The hemp industry in the Manawa--. I district is experiencing busy times at present, and a Pnlmerston North merchant states that all the mills ar"running full.'' This desirable position is brought about by the ruling values on the London market and trie firm demand in Australia, Avhere NewZealand fibre is in request for bincTer twine and other purposes.

It has now been decided by the Government to allow the export of limited quantities of oats. Applications for permission to export will have to be made to the Minister for Customs, and they should be forwarded without delay. In order that sufficient stocks shall be retained to meet the country's own requirements the position will be looked into every month, and export?, will be regulated accordingly.

A very interesting Teport concerning the climatic conditions expedience*! in Napier has been prepared by the Marist Fathers, of Greenmeadows, at the request of the Borough Council. Comparisons are made with towns claiming to have the most genial climate in the world, nad the figures quoted show that the climate of Napier approaches that of San Diego and surpasses these of the most noted European and North African health resorts.

Lodge doctors in Wellington, through the local branch of the British Medical Association, have called upon

the friendly societies to agree to :■ new scale of payments for medical attention. In the city the present payment is 15/ per member per annum, but the doctors has asked that this be increased to 25/. Though some of the friendly societies regard the claim r:~ an attempt at imposition, it is understood that the doctors are likelv fo

have their way in the matter, as no practical alternative is open.

At a meeting last night wo understand that the Railway and Civil .Service, considered the question of running u Queen for the Carnival'- Tt was decided that they should do so and that she should be known as the Red Cross Candidate. This decision is a

very gratifying one. for it indicates that these two branches of th-? Government Service, which represent a. strong body in Taihape, have given their hearty support to the Carnival. With an enthusiastic committee, there is no doubt that the Red Cross candidate will receive strong support, and the promptitude of the Railway and Civil Service in deciding to enter a candidate of their own augurs well for their strong support' of the Carnival. In deciding to call their candidate the Red Cross Candidate, the meeting made a wise choice, for this will undoubtedly draw a larger number of votes than if the candidate was directly connected with the Service by name, by being designateo, possibly, the Civil Service Candidate.

"Imports.'' states the Trade Review, "have been coming to hand more freely lately, which calls for financing by the banks, but in many quarters stocks are low, and so merchants are in a good position financially; also, exports are keeping up well for. the time of the year, helping to baltonce the account. The surplus of over £5,000,000 of deposits over advances, as shown by the bank returns for the last quarter, means a considerable fund to carry on operations for the next few months or so. This puts the banks in an excellent position to meet the demands that will shortly set in for the gathering and moving of the coming season's produce. The Savings Bank figures show 'that the Government holds the enormous total of over £20,000,000 to the credit of depositors. This shows that the savings of the community stand at a high level, and they must have increased by over £2,000,000 in the last twelvemonth. A'ifeo, the Government has acquired | substantial funds at a comparatively cheap rate through this channel. While I money is plentiful at present, rates are 1 not lowering, as there is a general feeling that before very long there will be ample scope for investment at very remunerative rates, and the expectation is that rates will not ease in the near future, but rather that the value of money will maintain a fairly high level for some little time to come, in view of the enormous calls for capital caused all over the world by the war."
