SHELLS AMD AMMUNITION Th 9 supply of ammunition has become the question of the day, not only in England, but in France. When the wf,r beggn France- furnished a supply of 1200 shells per gun with a rescrv e of 200. This was considered encivrh for aM emergencies. At that time the French arsenals were able to -produce 13,500 shells a day. At present tbxfy <MVt producing' she'.ls a day, and th 9 quantity is still too small. The French armies are actually firing that number of shells every 24 hours. The Germans fired 20,000 shells in an hour and a half upon a front 350 yards in elngth, and they fired 200,000 in about a week in the forest cf Apremont. The daily consumption of rif.e cartridges by all the arir..i:.;3 is about 30,000,000. To an even creator extent the war has become an affair cf ammunition. Th e storming cf '.-enohes without a preliminary bombardment is too costly. General JolTre is said to have asked for sufficient shells for the simultaneous bombardment so tremendous that nothing can remain alive within its range. All the armies are now short of ammunition, but the Germans ar e said to be better supplied than any. But even the- Germans are said to be economical on the western front as a result of their orodigal consumption in the east.
