TAIHAPE VOLUNTEERS
A QUESTION OF LEAVE. A day or two ago the laihape Patriotic Committee' met to endeavour to formulate some way of providing a fitting send-off, and saying good-bye to our Taikape lads who are now in camp, and who may b e leaving New Zealand shores any day now to take; their places beside their compatriots in the trenches on Gallipoli Peninsula. It was decided that a send-off worthy of (the district should be given if arrangements could be made to secure their collective presence for one night. The Patriotic Committee requested Mr H. D. Bennett, as Acting-Mayor, to endeavour to ge ; t the necessary leave and he wired to the camp authorities accordingly. Th e reply from the Camp Commandant is disappointing, and b reads as follows; H. D. Bennett, Acting-Mayor, Taihape. Regret that it is not possible to accede to your request for leave for the Taihape; men. All are fully occupied now in fitting cut, etc. It is impossible to let the men awaj during the day. (Sgd.) CAMP COMMANDANT.
