The rivalry between aeroplane anti dirigible has led to the invention of. varous aeroplane missies other than ths bomb. For instance, there is the fire dart used by the French. This dart consists of a tube about 3<lin Pong, Sin thick, and weighs about 21b. The tube contains half a pint of 'benzine and n stout steel needle, and in falling it is kept vertical, with the point of the needle sticking out of the lower end, by the action of a small steel l propeller at the top. When the dart.strikes an airship the needle-point pierces the o-as ?as bag, and the tube catches fast to it by a number of fish-hooks. At the same time the shock ignites an explosive mixture which is packed round the T "'’ ri>e~-v i s that first the benzine in the tube blazes up, and then the gas in the balloon catches, involving the dostrvetion of the airship.
