An increase of 3S per cent, in the ■household accounts of a family of ten persns is shwn by a correspondent in a letter to the Auckland Star. He suggests that as the Foods Commission has stated that the increase in the coat of living during the past year has been only 17.9, his experience should be inJbresting. He gives a statement of the prices for one week in his household, comparing thin with the prices before the war, as follows: —19 loaves of bread at Id —before the war, 0/4; price at present at sd, 7/11. 121bs of flour at (5/3 per 501 b bag, 1/7; at 10/3 501 b bag, 2/7. 51bs butter at 1/1 per lb, 5/5; at 1/8 per lb, 8/4. 151 b meat at 4d per lb, 5/-; at (id, 7/6. 21b cheese at Sd per lb, 1/4; at lid, 1/10. 7 quarts of milk at 3d per quart, 1/9; at 4d per quart, 2/4. Half-pound of tea at 1/S lb, lOd; at 1/lOj lid. 21bs currants at 4d per lb, Sd; at 6d per lb, 10-. 21b sultanas at sd, lOd; at 7d per lb, 1/2; (5 tins of jam at 4d tin, 2/-; at 5d tin, 2/6. 21bs bacon at lid per lb, 1/10; at 1/1 per lb, 2/2. 11b baking powder, 1/-; at 1/6, 1/6. llbe andles 6d; at 6d, 6d. 1 bag gerstina, 1/2; at 1/4, 1/4. Totals —1 10/2, and £2 1/7.
