James Paget, middle aged, waggon driver, was found drowned in the Mo* kau River at Piopio. He has beta missing since Sunday.

The appeal Court has made absolute an order to strik e W. G. H. Baillie off the 'roll of solicitors of the Supreme Court of New Zealand with fifteen guineas costs, and disbursements. A CHRISTCHURCH FIRE. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A fire, vest erevo, caused considerable damage in a two-storey building in Litchfield Street, owned by Mr K, F. England. The flames swept the top floor, which was used as a soft goods warehouse, by Archibald Clark and Sons, Limited, and completely destroyed a large stock, which was insiir, od fed £ISOO in the New Zealand Office, and for £ISOO in the South British. The stock on the ground floor, owned by Ford and Mirams, was alsD damaged.

The Prime Minister informed ; a reporter to-day that he intended to arrange with his colleague, the Minister* for Customs, to take the import duty off butter until the new season’s supply was available. As far as. he was able to judge, there were' ample supplies in hand to last until the new a-vt-son, and, he said, there was no reason
for the increase that had taken, place in the price of butter.
THE COST OF LIVING. DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. WELLINGTON, This Day, Replying, to-day, to a deputation from thg Federation Labour Conference, Mr Massey referred to the Question of war taxation. A war tax, he said, must come, bur at the moment !h e could not tell what extra taxation would be requred. It would bs a large sum that was required and Parliament would have to be asked for it. Asked how would it. be raised, Mr Massey said it would be very improper for him to give away decisions of Cabinet before they wore placed before th 6 House, but he would say that they had to beaf in mind the present cost of living to the wage earner. One cf the speakers in the deputation had suggested an increase in both the Graduated Land and Incom e Tax. “I can’t say,” added Mr Massey, “what we win do, but I can say that I think we shall bg able to raise the money necessary without making the conditions of living harder to those who have difficulty now in making both ends? meet. That is as far as I can go now, but you will see what is in my mind and in the minds of my col-
leagues.
THE VVILLOCHRA MET BY THE PREMIER. WELLINGTON, This Bay. The Willochra arrived in port last night, bringing 273 New Zealand officers and men from Gallipoli. The cases on board are scheduled as invalids: Four officers and 106 men; wounded, 8 officers and 155 men, 25 of whom are stretcher-bearer cases. Early this morning th e Ministers for Defence and Public Health visited fcho ship, when th Ci men medically examined wer e paid and arrangements made for despatch to their homes. Later th e Premier went aboard and welcomed the wounded, who were in
charge of Captain McKenzie, military officer of the Medical Staff, assisted by eight Australian Nursing Sisters, of whose good work the men speak in highest praise.
Except for th e intense heat in the Red Sea the voyage was most delightful, and served to set the men up in a mog-t wonderful way, wounds healing most'Satisfactorily.
