GAY LADiES OF LILLE. A German officer stationed at Lille writes » curious letter to a Swiss newspaper, in which he speaks of conditions in that city, and becomes quite enthusiastic over the pretty girls aud their elegant attire. “When I first, entered Lille,” he said, “I was amazed at the devastation wrought by our shells. Street after street of ruined houses met my gaze; but, nevertheless, the cwmen seamed happy and gay. In the Grand Rue there is every afternoon a regular .parade of women, the like of which I have never seen. Low shoes appear to be the fashion—shoes of a go!d e bronze, with marvellous stockings. The stockings are like spider webs, with th e pink flesh showing in tantalising fashion. They show embroideries of flowers, which set oif the slimness of the ankkle. For hours I sit in the different cafes and watch thes G women, wrapped in costly furs, their toques adorned with paradise plumes, and their spider-web stockings j and bronze shoes. Many of them are pretty, and they all appear happy, despite the fact that the roar of the cannon is constantly heard. Their demeanour is such as if there were no such .thing as a dreadful and horrible war right in their midst.”
