:nch tragedy at home. Lieutenant Darton, SOth Field Company (Reserve Section) Royal Engineers, and a sapper of the same company lost their lives at Colchester in a gallant attempt at rescue. Some tools had been left the previous day in an exploded mine under a trench, and a party of sappers went to recover them. The first sapper who entered the passage., which was 12 feet under ground, cam c . cut complaining of dizziness, and warned the rest cf the section not to enter, as it was dangerous. Ten minutes later, however, he re-entered it himself, and as he did not return another sapper went after him. K e could not se e the sapper, whose name was Williams, but could hear his groaning. Sappers Simpson, Scott, and Bulloch then went to the rescue of Williams, but all were overcome by gas. Corporal Blyth and another sapper succeeded in getting cut all except Williams. Word was then sent to Lieutenant Darton, who cycled to the spot, and, though breathless from his exertions, at once entered the mine. He did not return, and several sappers were sent after him. IT 0 and Williams wore ultimately brought out unconscious, and though oxygen was administered, both died. When Lieutenant Darton as recovered from the mine h e was firmly clasping the arm °f Sapper Wiliams. The gas generated by the explosions on the previous day wer e of the ordinary character. The mouth of th e mine tunnel was closed en Thursday night to prevent children entering it.
