MATAROA NOTES.
(Own Correspond ent). The dane e given by the ladies of the district, in the Hall, on. Friday night last, was in every respect a huge success. The rainy weather, lately experienced, and which, it was feared] would greatly interfere with the attendance, cleared off during the afternoon, and gave a fine night. Somewhere about one hundred people at- ! t!eiid,ed, and .so .thcirouglily 1 /enjoyed themselves that the proceedings did not break up until about five o'clock on Saturday morning. Mrs Shute did a roaring business at a "jumble stall," and the funds were also augmented by the sale and re-sale of several turkeys, and other poultry and vegetables. The evening's proceedings were enlivened by songs from Messrs Stephens (3) and Lambert, of Karioi, the lastnamed receiving a shower of coin, at the conclusion of one of his songs.
On behalf of the lady promoters Mr ! W. Murphy in a few well-chosen words, thanked all for their attendance and hearty appreciation. T|li e hall was very tastefully decorated with evergreens and ferns, which with the addition of the various colours of the ladies' dresses made a most enchanting sight. As there were no expenses of any description the total were the net proceeds, and amounted to somewhere about £2O. This amount will be judiciously expended in the purchase of material to be worked up into comforts for "our boys" at the front. The promoters of the danc e ar e to be most heartily congratulated on the success attending their efforts, and those present desire to express their best thanks for the nlgjht's enjoyment.
