CURIOUS WAR PREDICTION.
WHAT A BRETON FORETOLD. A distinctly strange, war prediction was made, according to the ''Temps," by a well-known Paris painter's model at the beginning of last July. The man, a Breton, foretold, it is related, not only the outbreak of war, but his own death and the date at which hostilities would cease. The painter is celebrated for his military canvases, and the Breton had for several years served him as a model. Quite early last July he came to the studio apparently in a disturbed frame of mind. "War is awaiting us," he exclaimed, and before the artist had time to express his surprise at this singular announcement, the Breton added, "It will be declared ion August 2." Halfjestingly the painted retorted, "Well, since you seem to know so exactly when the war will begin, perhaps you can inform m e when it will end." Without the slightest hesitation th e re. ply came, "On May 22." Thinking the man was a little mad, the artist said, i "If that is so, my good fellow, just lock in upon me on May 23, and we shall see whether your prophecy has come true.' "That," replied the Breton, "will be impossible, because in the second half of November I shall be killed." His predictions, the 'Temps' , observes, hav e so far been fulfilled, ', since war was declared en August 2, | and on November 27 the Breton, who had volunteered for service, fell mortally wounded. It is evident, however, that his forecast with regard to the end of the war has not been borne out by the event. Perhaps he meant May 22, 1916.
