GENERAL WAR NEWS.

SSNKING THE ARMENIAN. THE CAPTAIN'S STORY. (Red 1.35 p.m.) LONDON, July 1. The Admiralty announces that a mine or torpedo damaged the destroyer "Ligthning" off the East Coast last night. The boat is now in harbour with fourteen of th e crew missing. Capt Trickery, captain of the Armenian, interviewed,, said the submarine signalled us to stop by putting a couple of gunshots across our bows when

four miles off. I put ray stern to him, and ran for it. He shelled continuously and shrapnel killed several of the crew and precipitated some into the

sea. I realised that the enemy was gaining, but struggled on till a shell knocked the steering gear out of order and another fell on the engine room. A third carried <away the Marconi House, and a fourth cut down the funnel and disabled the men in the stokehold, and prevented m© getting steam. Th e ship was on fire in three places when I decided to surrender. I had resisted an hour, and twelve or thirteen men were lying dead on the k deck. The submarine Commander made me iciear the ship, and th e Armenian sank. After this they picked up som e of the crew floating ion life belts; most members of the crew perished were Americans.
