THE CARNIVAL.
(To the Editor.) ' Sir, —Would you kindly grant me space to express an opinion on. tlie-mu'eh-discussed Carnival.? I have never yet heard of anyone who wished to discourage fund-raising for the'soldiers, but we all want to "squash"' expenses for their benefit (carried unanimously!* I feel almost sorry for the secretary, whom, I think, none need envy what is left of the £5 a week after expenses are paid; to my idea, it is only a small item on the expenditure list necessary for the success of a Carnival. ■Re Mr. Loughnan's objection to a war tax: Granting for the sake of argument, that everyone is willing to pay their £5 or , £SOOO, according to' i their just portions, could there possibly | be a more economical or fairer, way of . collecting it? On the other hand, if the returned soldier has to wait for relief until such a tax becomes a reality. God help him! We must do something for him in the meantime; but surely, someone can suggest a less expensive way than a Carnival. I defy the world' to suggest one more expensive.—l am,, etc., ECONOMY..
