PATRIOTIC FUNDS.
(To the Editor) Sir, —I have a brief reply to make to Mr James Smith’s letter of yesterday. Firstly, it is a refreshing novelty to find that there are still a few people who publish their letters over their own signatures. Secondly, Mr Smith has said “The country needs money and men.” Very true; and he urges 'that the money should be raised by taxation. W ; ill he complete the parallel and suggest that the men should b© raised by conscriptionn Surely not? If we can raise the money we want without taxation, more credit to u& again; and if we follow th e generous lead which those gentlemen he names have given us, wa shall subscribe an amount that will be a credit to us, and not the disgrace that a war tax would be. Further; if the £21,574 that came from Masterton the other day were th e result of a tax, Taihapa’s quota on the same scale might cause a good many views on the subject of a war tax to be altered. —I am, etc., R. J. LOITGHNAN. Taihape. June 25, 1915.
