THE TAIHAPE CARNIVAL.

1a strongly-worded protest. (To th 6 Editor). Sijr,—l have been away from Taibape so that it was only to-day I saw your report of the firsts meeting of t,he Carnival Committee. Youp report makes interesting, very interesting reading. I am delighted to learn just what patriotic self-denial is—yes, the real genuine local product. The Mayor, at th e public meeting, urged upon us the need of self-denial. Now, we see the REAL thing. A secretary is necessary to control the results of OUR denial, so as one in the public eye, he will set us a noble example, he will slave in this position for the real self-denial for a return of a paltry £5 a week AND travelling allowance. Sir, w© cannot ’permit the gentleman to be so heroic, the sacrifice is too great. At the meeting, Mr McLennan said, “The public had been talking about the Carnival, but nobody seemed to know what was being done.” True. Nobody did know WHAT was being done, and the self-denying public of Taibape now concludes it HAS been in the dark. We would like to know,, Sir, what next will be DONE with OUR money. I, for one, would like to know if there is another self-denial position offering. I also note we have a prophet In Mr Beban. He “considered Thursday too soon lest there should be a hitch in the arrangements,” Unless the Taihape public is possessed of th e "Patience of Job,” there will be a great “hitc.b” before next committee meeting-

Sir, a paid secretary is not required at all. There are men in our midst, able to give their time to this work as the denial, while others give tbeir money. Again, if the committee considered a paid .secretary necessary, applications should have been called for the position. This need only have caused a delay of a few days at the most- The position of secretary to this fund is a public one, and the committee bad no right to appoint a man to this office. I consider we have been insulted by the action of the Patriotic Committee, and we, as citizens of the town and district, must refuse to proceed with the Carnival, till the committee and. the whole case have been re-organised, so that True self-denial shall be th e guiding principle of the movement. —Yours etc., TRUE SELF-DENIAL.
