* : ORDINARY COMPETITIONS. The local Rifle Club's competitions were continued on Saturday, when, on account of the weather, only a small number of riflemen put in an appearance. Shooting was difficult at 300yds. but a better light prevailed for the longer range. Rifleman Thur+on topped the list with 61 and gets a leg-in. Following are the Bcores: —

NEW ZEALAND THREATENED. BY THE GREAT OCTOPUS. "New Zealand is at last threatened by that great octopus, the American Meat Trust," declares the Auckland "Star." "For months past the country has bftpn approaching a grave commercail crisis- -one of the gravest in its history. When the war broke cut it was declared by those in a position to judge that there would be a great shortage cf ships during the summer months, when the meat season would b e at its height, The Prime Minister was appealed to, and promised that all would be well. But all is not well. Bad as the pos-ition was in the summit, it is now infinitely worse, and steadily the position grows me're and more serious. Figures have been published showing that this month Auckland Hses £76,000 because there are no ships to take -away, our produce, and in the last, four months no less than '£250,000 has been shut out of circulation in this district because the farmers cannot dispose of their stock. The Auckland freezing works have been idle for 80 days of the last 110, because their freezing stores are filled to overflowing. Yet the farmers everywhere are growing frantic because of the accumulation of stock and produce on their bauds. The Government declares it can do nothing, and the "glut goes on. What the nositon will be at the end of next month, when the butter season commences, is unpleasant to contemplate."
