No official synopsis of New Zealand casualties has been issued, and some of the lists have contained duplications, but the following is approximately correct up to and including List No. 76: Killed in Action: Offi ter s 34, men 376; died of wounds, 15. officers, .139 men;, missing, 5 officers; 213 men; wounded, 88 officers, IS3O men. Total" casualties: Officers 142, men 2549. ~:^ AURORA AUSTRALIS. =|j| VIEW FROM NAPIER. NAPIER, This Day. ,Last night in .the southern sky was witnessed an atmospheric disturbance and display which lasted for some three hours, and which is said to be the Aurora Australis. Viewed from the Napier Parade it was a scene of magnificence; the sky had a fiery red, appearance, and along the horizon it was a sombre half light through which with continuous rapidity, great streams of light shot upwards, . ■ 3sj RETURNED SOLDIERS. DUNELIN, June 17. Inquiry at the Defence office shows that only a few of the men who re- . turned by the Mokoia yesterday are seriously ill, many of them having, largely or partially recovered. The remainder are suffering from a variety of complaints. Some twenty of the men were discharged to-day, the medical authorities- considerihy that they wer e sufficiently well to return home. The remainder are undergoing medical treatment but will probably be ready for discharge by the end of next yeek\ THE SHORTAGE OF SUGAR. K JAM FACTORY'S POSITION. NELSON, June 17. Seen to-day regarding the statement . made by the Auckland manager of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in re. plying to th e telegraphed statement that the "K" Jam Factory would have to close down for a period owing to being unable to secure the necessary supplies cf sugar, Mr Kirkpatrlck said the managers remarks, as telegraphed were very unfair to his firm, and some reply was necessary. For instance, it was stated (hat the company was. unable to supply companies for speculative purposes. This implies that the firm had supplies upon which it intended to profit in some way. This is absolutely incorrect. All that the firm desired was enough sugar to keep the works going. Further, he had offered to pay an increased price for sugar if '" it could be supplied, simply to save closing down the works and inflicting hardship on the workers.
