SINGLE MEN AND THE V/AR. J A STRIKING RESOLUTION. '/. _ _ Press Association —Copyright. j AUCKIuAND, May 20. ' A striking resolution has been passed by the Whangarei County Council in respect of single men and recruiting. The resolution, moved by the chairman (Mr J. R. Mclnnes) was asfollows: "It is with regret that this Council notes the lack of single men coming forward to offer their services for the European conflict. This is the means of married men's services being accepted in order to make up the necessary numbers. While the Council has to record keen appreciation o£ th e immense sacrifice made by those married men, too many of whom are in the casualty lists, it cannot but deprecate the part ot many hundreds o£ young fellows who are able to go, and who should have volunteered in such numbers that the Defence Department need not have accepted the offers of married men. The Council is of opinion that there are a very, great number of families in both town and country who, having two or more sons unmarried, are not bearing the burden of war as neighbours who have perhaps given father and husband or several sons. The Council regrets that there are several districts in the Whangarei County which have responded badly with recruits, when those districts contain a scoop of young men, whole families of whom are improving their own positions and circumstances at the expense of those who have gone to fight the country's enemy on his own ground." . Mr H. . Morey seconded the motion He said he had two single sons and a married son serving, and he felt strongly on the sugject The resolution was carried unanimously. i

The "Herald," in referring editorially to the alien question, says those who break windows when they ought to be off to the front should be treated by the Magistrates as the worhtless shirkers they are. They ought to walK shyly in th e land they have not the courage to defend, and might well fe> spect the Prussians, who have drilled devastating hordes out of just suCjbJ hopeless material. Nothing yhatever is to be gained by rioting, while mucli is lost —our self-respect, our pride in th e law, our sense of justice.
