Babhington Ravoncrcft, three charges' were preferred with three counts on each: Stealing or receiving a camera, a chronometer and a typewriter, the property of persons not known. Ravenscroft was appointed Provost Marshall at Raboul, which etailed the' control of a large amount of German property. The articles were discovered in Ravenscroft’s possession upon his return to Sydney. The court dismissed the charges regarding the typewriter and chronometer. Ravenscroft’s defence stated that the strictest enquiry had been made for the owner of the camra, but failed. He was under the belief that he, or any other officer or man could take any property theyJCound in a private house if the owner was unfindable. The Court’s verdict was not guilty on all charges. In the Melbourne Senate, Mr Pearce, replying to questions regarding alleged misappropriations of goods at Rabaul, said the private who made the charge, had since signed an admission that the charges were untrue. The editor of the newspaper which published the charges stated he had noi evidence to support rebuttal of them,. and added that the charges were those of a weak character who did not appear to realise the seriousness of hie? statements. Th e sole punishment h&r received was a reprimand.
