New Zealand has been specially thanked by the Kin g, and also by the British Government for the

over the Allies success, and the people are bemoaning a lost opportunity of advantageously joining the Entente. A few days ago we were advised that Alln-d troops had landed at Enos, on the Turkish mainland, but indications point to our lads being with, the forces that have now a footing on the Gallipoli peninsula. What tin; rnagniticenl achievement of Now Zealanders and Australians may be wo do not knew, but it may mean anything from, an important local success to a clean sweep of the pen insula, to as far north as Bulair, wluve Turkish trenches have been cut from the Dardanelles to the Saros. ft is not impossible, though improbable, perhaps, that these trenches across the isthmus have been captured, and the enemy to the south entirely cut off, and with the advance of the armies lauded at the two points to the south, together with the work put in by warships, both from the Straits and from the landing side, the whole peninsula has capitulated. This would indeed be a magnificent achievement, but it is too much to expect, despite the , admitted bravery, dash, and gallantry of our men. We can only Avail for further news; the suspense here is too great to bear long in silence, and if details are not allowed to come to us some time to-day there must }>e very important, very serious reasons for secrecy. We are thrilled with pride- in what our lads have accomplished; from the nature of the praise avc know it is something more than ordinarily great and glorious, but avc look foinvard with extreme misgiving to the load of soitoav such magnicent achievements usually entail, and of Avhich we must expect to have our share. May our cause for sorrow be altogether disproportionate to the glorious encomiums our lads have Avon from our King and the British Government.
