SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

.f ■■ — ti; ' ‘ ANNUAL MtEtTNQ OF HOUSJfc- ' HOLDERS. • The •-statutory- meeting derer was heldlast night for th® SUTpose of receiving the annual report.SWl for : electing a new committee to carry on the business of the school far the ensuing- year, there being only som® ten'or twelve people present. Mr A. J. Joblin, chairman of the < School Committee, stated that he attended in accordance with instruction from the Board to open the meet-iJIE» and to ask them to appoint thejr owp chairman. He was not the chairman of that meeting. He remarked that ihfcwas sorry to see so few of the houssholders present; there were 400 children on the school roll; they could therefore hardly call the meeting a representative one. Before the cam'mjttee was elected there was a lot. of important business to be done, but fce did not think the meeting was sufficiently strong to elect a committee* and it would be best for the meeting to adjourn. However, he was not thei? chairman, and he then, called upon the meeting to elect one. Mr Joblin having been unanimously voted to the chair, said he conld only rdpeat what he had already said; tie meeting was not strong enough to jui>tify them proceeding to elect a committee. He regretted it very much, but the only course was, he thought, to adjourn the meeting till another time.

The Her, F. W. Stent asked fcopir •many members there were in the coja* mittee.

The ehairmnia &a,id nine, and &ix of > them were present. The Rev. Catherwood thought tSfc meeting should be adjourned; it would not be fair to the district to elect a. committee, seeing there we're ffo feW present. He moved that the meeting be adjourned. , The Chairman pointed out that t-K» committee nor the meeting had poweS* to say when the next meeting should he. held; he would communicate with th e Board and the meeting’would most likely, be fixed for-a, time when th£ interest: in other elections was not so strong; H thought they could then make sur e of getting a large, representative meeting. ■Rev. F. -W. Stent asked whether they could elect part of the number required. , .

The .chairman said they could elefct so many, but they must have five, which, number constituted a, quorum. He would take a vote on.the motion to adjourn from the few good men and true who were present, but they could nominate candidates for election from this meeting if they washed. The Rev. Mr Cathersvood said to elect the committee, at that meeting would be too much like electing other; he had some feeling about the matter and would, not accept election under such circumstances.

In answer to Mr ■ McCormick, the chairman said he ertainly thought that a very much better attendance at a meeting would result when the excitement of other elections had cooled down.

The. Her. Catherwood thought there would be no' difficulty in getting a good meeting if notices were given out in the various churches and other efforts

were made. Mr McCormick said there seemed to he no objection to adjourning; he thought householders should be given another opportunity to be present.

The motion to adjourn was then unanimously agreed to. and th© headings terminated.
