SEQUEL TO WRECK OP KAIRIKI. CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. The Arbitration Court awarded Ada Garrett £2OO in a compensation case against the Kaiapoi Shipping Company, as a partial dependant on her son. William Garrett, aged 15, who was drowned in the Kairiki wreck on September 26th. The Court also awarded Ada Mary Garrett, as a dependant in the same wreck, £SOO and costs

A PECULIAR COURT CASE. TIMARTJ, April 22. A peculiar case, in which a charge of theft and indications of conspiracy were oncerned, was heard by the Magistrate, M r V. G. Day. In May last year Foster, an employee of th e Harbour Board, had his overcoat stolen from the wharf-shed." On December 24 and on January 7 the police received anonymous letters indicating where the coat could be found. As a matter of fact the coat was found on Boxing Day by some boys, hidden on the property of their father, a man named Jackson, who wa s not employed on the wharf. Inquiries about the letters led to a man named Hughes, a fellow workman of Foster, being charged with theft. Tba only evidence against him was the fact that he was in the shed on the morning the coat was stolon, and that the writing of hi s nam e in a stock book kept by him resembled that of the :ar,bnymous letltersj .Ex'r/jrts} |in handwriting spoke confidently of the Similarity. At th e same time they said some entries in the book, were not in the same hand. Defendant's counsel asked for dismissal, as the accused had not had. the book all the time, and someone else had written his name in it. The Magistrate said, no jury would convict en the evidence, and dismissed the ease.
