The Borough Council last night agreed to a Government proposal to raise money by public subscription, supplemented pound for pound by the State, for Belgian Relief. The letter from the Minister for Finance showed that it would be necessary to levy at the rate of three half-pence pier head per month on the whole population of the Dominion to raise the required £SOOO per month.

It wa s discovered at the Borough Council meeting last night that the Mayor’s honorarium had not been voted by the Council according to Act of Parliament. The Loudon Times’ correspondent at Pekin says that the tension in China is considerable. The Government has strictly enjoined the civil, military and naval authorities to refrain from any action calculated to provoke trouble or give umbrage to Japan. The Napier Frivolity Minstrels gave nr. excellently performed programme to a fairly good house, in the Taihape Town Hall last night, The Town Clerk notifies that all rates unpaid on the 22ud April, .1915, will he loaded with an additional 10 per cent. Owing to an important piece of apparatus having missed the train, and as it cannot arrive in Taihape before midnight to-night, Mr. Bailey notifies that "Judith of Bethulia” cannot be shown in the Town Hall until Monday night. This wonderful picture will be screened on Monday night without fail, as telegrams make it humanly certain that the missing machinery will arrive to-night There wdll be no pictures at the Town Hall until Monday night. For th e purpose of raising the money required for Belgian Relief by * voluntary subscriptions supplemented by a subsidy from the Treasury, the Dominion has been divided according to provincial districts, and this amount to be subscribed by each district-on a population basis • would work out as follows:

At the smoke concert and farewell tendered Constable McLeod last night, vocal items were contributed by Messrs. Fraser, Haybittle, Murray, Cody, Watson, Walker, Doherty, E. 11. McLennan and responded to by Messrs. H. M. Bcrtenshaw, T. Shute, and J. Cody; "Sports and Pastimes,” "The Ladies,” "The■ Press,” . and "The Chairman.”
