A critic says it is a masterpiece of masterpieces and deserves the fullest encomiims. It is a vivid and realistic revelation cf one cf the most desperately fought. battljas recorded in the'Bible. The Assyrian King had sent Holofernes with 120,000 men to visit vengeance •n all the earth. He met with unexpected defence by the Jews at Bethulia; he unsuccessfully stovmd the' city.and the'n diecided to starve the people into submission. The Jews werta dying of thirst and starvation when a beautiful woman, Judith, offers to save r.he city; the picture gives all the details of how she did it. The mighty R'alls cf th|s city run a s far as the eye can reach and thousands of Jews soldiers with javelins, bows and other weapons crowd the battlements. In the distance is the enemy s enormous army with all th|3 horses, chariots and that day equipment of war. The full gorgjsousness of the picture can only be l-e.alised by being seen.
