THE CHERNIAVSKY’S

TOWN HALL LAST NIGH/T. The music-loving people of this district should most assuredly appreciate the efforts of Mr. Cochran, of the British and Continental Piano Company, Taihape, in bringing to us what was, in every sense, a delightful musical treat, and we trust that owing to the plethora of entertainments experienced of late, Mr. Cochran will not suffer finauciallv. ' The attendance was as large as could be expected; still it must have been somewhat disappointing to the Chcrniavsky brothers, who are usually greeted with packed auditorium:; wherever they perform. The programme selected was a comprehensive one including works of the greatest masters, written to bring out the extreme possibilities of each of the instruments of which the Cherniavskys are masters, so far as the word can be used. For each one of them not only played but they loved, carressed, and urged out of mechanism the feelings they wished to convey, to an unmistakeable degree, and at the close of some of the solos there was momentary stillness of recovery from the seductive, fascinating charm or spell that had been so skilfully wrought. We need not refer to the three performers comparatively, as they need to bo heard more than once to approach so difficult and delicate a task, but that their interpretations of some of the finest and most intricate conceptions of the great masters were appreciated was fully evidenced by the applause, and above all. it was indeed pleasing to note that the audience bestowed most attention on the very choicest of the gems that were offered. Such violin, cello and pianoforts performances wo are no,’ likely to hear again unless Mr. Cochran can induce Leo, Jan and Mischcl f.herniavskv to favour Taihape with another visit.
