, MISCHEL CHERNIAVSKY. ONE OV r iHV2 I.ITALLNG- V- DELISTS IN THE WORLD. Mischel Cherniavsky to-day is recognised as being amongst the first three greatest 'cellist s in the world. The 'cello in his hands becomes a stringed or*-jaii expressing every gamut of the emorions M.:u:L<el Obernimsky was born in Odessa, Russia, November 2nd, 1895, and gave early (indications of coming talent. It is said of him that at the age of six he was taken by his father to hear a great Russian 'cellist named Wersbilowitz, and the little Mischel was so moved by the sad, sweet melody that he began to cry, afterwards beseeching his father to buy him. a 'cello, and teach him to try and play "The same wonderful music"; but at first, the father laughed, and said, "that only someone very clever could play the 'cello." However, the boy so persisted that at dast a leeflo tyvas bought for him, and now ha is one of the three leading 'cellists of the world. Taikape residents may hear him and his talented brothers at the Town Hall on Monday night.
NELLIE STEWART. "SWEET NELL OF OLD DRURY." The company supporting Miss Nellie Stewart who will appear in the Town Hall, Taihape, next Tuesday evening, (is numerically tonfe oif the strongest that has ever toured the Dominion, nearly seventy persons are travelling and a huge quantity of scenery, costumes, and other stage accessories have to be transported. Included in the company are several artists of high attainments. The leading man of the combination is Mr Clarence' B)la.k'j.ston< ,<a English actor, with many London sue. cesses to his credit. Before he was engaged for the present tour he was playing at the Haymark(et Theatre*, London, and was specially chosen by Mr Harcourt Beatty, M|iss Stewart's colleague. on her last tour. - Mr Blakiston is described as an ieven finer artist than Mr Beatty. His work is smoother, more finished, with more evidence of thoughtful traininjg. Moreover; he has a distinguished appearance and a fine resonant voice. Mr Allan Wilkie is another newcomer, who, like Mr Blakiston, is making his first appearance in New Zealand. He is a recent arrival from London and jointed the company after the close of the Sydney season, so he has not appeared in New Zealand. Mr Wilkie is described as an artist of varied talents. As a Shakesperian actor and at the head of his own company he has played many important roles, including Hamlet, Othello, Shylock, Richard ILL, Malvolio, Pietruchio,, Jacjues, and Matthias in "The Bells. He has also appeared as Sir Peter Teazle and ohter high comedy parts, The box plans are now available at Finch's Bazaar, where very heavy booking has taken place.
