The King, which was to have been held in the Supreme Court this month, has been settled for £IOSO. It was a claim for £I4OO damages arising out of a collision between two railway engines at Duendin as a result of which plaintiff’s husband, a fireman, was killed.

Captain Henderson, formerly Adjutant of the Southland Regiment, is returning to New Zealand in connection, with charges that have been formulated against him and Lieut.-Colonel McClymont, who recently came back from the front. NAPIER, March 5. Walter Albert West, who was shofi four times by Alice May Parkinson (who attempted to commit suicide immediately afterwards), died at Napier Hospital this afternoon without regaining - consciousness. Deceased, who received three bulles in the head and on in the chest, was just over 21 years of a fee. The cartridges used were .22 calibre, and none of the pel-* lets was discovered, the patient’s condition being too serious to permit of an operation. The tragedy occurred about seven o’clock on Tu'esday night,, and West lingered in an unconscious condition for 671 hours. At half-pash two this afternoon the condition of the woman Parkinson was stated to be slightly improving. An inquest into the cause of the death of West will be opened to-day' (Saturday.) }

AMALGAMATED SOCIETY OF RAIL* WAY SERVANTS. j — \ WELLINGTON, This Day. The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants’ triennial conference was concluded to-day and the newly, elected Executiv e Council has commenced its sittings,at the end of which the Minister for Railways and the General Manager will be interviewed on a laijge number of subjects discussed at tba conference. The new Executive was elected by ballot of the Conference delegates as follows: Messrs R. Hampton (Addington), R. Moore (Petone), representing the workshops branch of the department; A. Whisker (Taumarunui), and D. Wilson (Christchurch),loco, branch:; P. Barry (Auckland), and P. Gaines (Balclutha), traffic; and I. Saunders (Dunedin), and L. Geraghty (Auckland), the maintenance branch. It was unanimously resolved to for* ward the following motion to tho Prime Minister and the press: That this large and representative conference of railway men views with alarm! the rapid increase in the prices ofi commodities, and we view with regret the apparent disinclination to grapple! effectually with those who are exploiting the people in a time of national crisis ,aud that tlfe Government b€ 3 urfged to take immediate and effectivs steps to remedy the present state ofl affairs.
