STARTLING ANN ON CEMENT. ENGLAND WANTS ALL MEAT EXPORTED FROM NEW ZEALAND. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day Speaking at the Masterton Show,' Mr Massey declared that important circumstances had recently arisen. The Imperial authorities had intimated that they would require all the beef and mutton that was exported from New Zealand. The Government had no details, but it was in communication with respect to the matter. It : was not thought that any serious loss would be occasioned to New Zealand. Nb doubt the Imperial authorities would pay fair prices. Mr Massey went on to say he sincerely hoped the shipping companies would he better prepared for carrying New Zealand produce next year than they were this, for if they are not ready to supply the required shipping facilities,the Government must undertake the work itself. ANOTHER NEW ZEALAND DEAD. AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. Advice has been received of the death of Second Lieutenant Erie Hardwick fayler, of the Ist Battalion York and Lancaster Regt., formerly of Auckland. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs Archdale Tayler, of Auckland. So far as is known, Lieut. Tayler had been serving with his regiment in the trenches in Northern France for about a fortnight when he contracted a severe attack cf pneumonia and was relieved to the military hospital at T-lase-brcuok, where he died. NURSES FOR THE FRONT WELLINGTON, This Day. As the nurses selected for the New Zealand nursing contingent which is o proceed to the front are already fully qualified it is not considered probable that they will require to undergo any period of training in camp before departure. Exactly blow and when they go has net yet been decided, but it, is quite possible that they will leave with the next draft, of reinforcements. If net, they will probably proceed to England by ordinary steamer. Sister Nurse, at present Matron in charge of the New Zealand nurses at Samoa, has been appointed Matron of the contingent. Ten members cf the contingent will be given the rank cf Sister, and the remainder will rank as nurses. The whole of the members of the contingent have the same status as officers in the New Zealand expeditionary force, and their term of service will be for the duration of the war,and their return to New Zealand. The rates of pay have been fixed as follows;
Matron 5u charge, £l5O per annum; Sisters, £120; nurses, £IOO Each member -cif the contingent will receive her outfit free, and where meals and residence are not otherwise provided for, will receive an allowance of 3s 6d per day. The War Office instructions will be strictly adhered to, and if any of those selected are over the prescribed age, she will not be allowed to go.
NOCTURNALLY CLAD WOMAN. DISAPPEARS FROM WESTPORT. WESTPORT, This Day. Mars Clayworth disappeared in her night attire, on Monday night, from her home at Te Kuha, near Westport. It is feared she has got into the Duller River. She has been ill. There are no tidings of the old man. Solomon Blair, who has now been missing three weeks. RAILWAY LABOUR INCREASED PAY WANTED NAPIER, This Day. At a la rely attended meeting cf the Nanier and Waipuknrau branch .cf the Enginedrivers, Firemen, and Cleaners’ Association, a resolution was passed askng their executive council to impress cn the Government the urgent necessity cf giving effect to Parliament’s recommendation to increase their pay. A GISBORNE SUICIDE. GISBORNE, T|iiis Day. Thomas Wallace,a labourer, committed suicide by cutting his throat with :i butcher’s knife. The deceased’s manner had been peculiar during the evening; he was suffering from the effects of drink. GAZETTE EXTRAORDINARY. NEW LIQUOR REGULATIONS. WELLINGTON, This Day. By a Gazette Extraordinary, issued to-dav, the following additional regulations are made under “The War Regulations Act, 191-4”: —“Nor person shall soil any intoxicating liquor to any member of the Defence Forces or to any member of the Expeditionary Forces when in uniform, for consumption elsewhere than on the premises where it is sold, and no person shall .give or supply or act as agent for the purchase of any intoxicatng liquor for any member of the Defence Forces when in uniform for consumption elsewhere than on the -rmjjra-.'*[-nr™r—i rrrfiwtfiiif r ' v ' > *' ‘■’implied or
