GERMAN SOCIALISTS’ ATTITUDE.
Press Association —Copyright. AMSTERDAM, Feb 16. A Berlin telegram states that a meeting of Socialists decided not to support peace until Germany is victorious on at least one front. Government circles recently inquired whether the Social Democratic Party favoured peace. The leaders replied that the workers had been the chief losers by the war, and they would rather start a revolution than net receive compensation for their sacrifice. A SECOND VENICE. ROME UNDER WATER, ROME, Feb. 16. The Tiber has risen 50 feet, and the lower parts of the city have become w second Venice. The Vatican quarters generally are under water to a depth of five feet. The patients in Santo Spirito hospital have been removed from the upper storeys, which are in danger of cotlapse. A number of historic sites, including the Bridge of Saint Angelo, built by the Emperor Hadrian, are submerged and threatened with destruction. SARAH BERNHARDT. REPORTED BOSS OF A LEG. PARIS, Feb. IS. SYDNEY, Feb. 10. Mr. Holman has received further reports from detectives on the bribery rumours in connection with the Wheat Acquisition Act. The Cabinet is consicring the matter, and probably will appoint a Royal Commission of Inquiry DISCUSSION BY INTER-STATE COMMISSION. SYDNEY, Fob. 16. Before the Inter-State Commission, counsel submitted an argument against the contention that the Wheat Acquisition Act was intended to benefit NewSouth Wales alone, and that the State had no power to legislate for the benefit of other States.
