A STATEMENT DENIED.

MR GUTHRIE AND THE PORTFOLIO OF EDUCATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb 12. Questioned with regard to a statement made by Fred Pirani at Ohakune, that Mr Guthrie had been called to Wellington to receive the portfolio of Education, Mr Massey said the matter had never been considered by Cabinet at present. He could not express any opinion on any possible appointment. ACCIDENTAL DEATH, A SURFACEMAN KILLED, GREYMOUTH, Feb 11, At Greymouth, Joseph Noble, aged 38, single, was killed while engaged as surfaceman unloading stores at the river protection works. It appears the gang was in the act of tipping an extra large boulder when the truck overturned and two others were severely, but not seriously, injured. The fire had a good hold when it was discovered, but notwithstanding the inflammable nature of ihe stcek, the brigade, assisted by the high water pressure supply, quickly got control. The insurances on buildings are £IOOO in the Queensland; on the stocks; Tustin £6OO in the Guardian; Moore £SOO in the Guardian. The Chinaman’s insurance is not available.
