SHIP ASHORE. ’- •? THAMES, Feb. 5, An Italian ship, the Eurasia (Capt. Alivaria), bound from Belfast and Auckland to Monte Video, tonnage 1742, went ashore on a mud flat opposite the Thaine’s, of f-he Piako River, at ten o’clock last night. The cause of the mishap is the compass being cut of order. No damage or loss is likely, as the ship is in soft mud. It may be detained some days. Tug assistance is being sought. The vessel left Auckland yesterday morn ing.
OPIUM SMOKERS FINED. ■ ' AUCKLAND, Feb. 5. For smoking opium, a Chinaman was fined £lO and £3 19s costs in the Police Court to-day. Another celestial who abetted smoking to the extent of giving his friend the use cf a pipe, was fined £5 and £3 19s costs:
A CHRISTCHURCH FOUNDLING.
IN A HOLLOW TREE,
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 5. A male child, alive, about six weeks old, was discovered last night in the hollow of a tree on the River Avon, near Darlington Bridge. The foundling was unaffected by its experience, and was taken to a maternity home.
