The Department of Agriculture, Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January 23rcl. (Note Quo. tions unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot.) Mutton: The market is steady,• and there is a fair business doing. Canterbury sld per lb; North Island 5 7T6a. Lamb: The market is steady. Canterbury G 5-Sd per lb. The supply is run ning short. Other than Canterbury, this season’s, 7d; the very best quality is as high as 7id, second grade G 5-Sd. Beef: The market is firm. - There is an increasing demand for better grades owing to the short supply of cbillod. Hindquarters, G 5-16 d per lb; forequarters 53d-; chilled binds, 7 l-8d; fores, 53d. Butter; The market closed rather quiet, but a fair demand continues Danish, quiet, 150/ to 154/; New Zealand, 142/ to 144/; exceptional 146/-; Siberian 136/ to 138/; Argentine, 140/ to 144/. Cheese: The market remains firm. There is a good demand. Canadian, market quiet but firm, white and coloured, 84/ to 86/; New Zealand, a good demand continlueja, hvhite and coloured, 82/ to 83/, exceptionally 84/; English Cheddar, firmer, 60/. Hemp; The market is firmer, and there is a better demand. The market is speculative. New Zealand good fair, per ten, £27, fair £25: fair current Manila £29. The forward shipment sold at the same price. Wool: The m?.:ket is firm and at the advance. All merinos have gained id per lb since the opening of the sales.
Wheat: The market is firm on account of a report from the Argentine that the weather there is too wet. Nominal quotations are: Canadian, per quarter, 58/; Argentine, January shipment. 60/. excluding war risk. WELLINGTON CUSTOMS. The Customs revenue received at Wellington yesterday totalled £2867 8/. STOCK REPORTS. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having a fair yarding of stock at their Marton sale on Tuesday, 26th inst., which sold as below: Small lambs 4/6 to 6/6,medium lambs S/l to 8/6, very fair lambs lo 9/. rape lambs to 10/6, light fat ewes to 17/-. Loan and Mercantile report; At Mini, itangi sale on Monday we bad a fair varding of cattle, all of which sold well at late rates. We quote as follows: Mixed weaners 18/ to 19/6, 18-months steers £3 15/, 2-year empty heifers £3 15/. store cows aged £2 6/ to £3, forward cows £4 to £4 19/6, tat cows £6, bulls £4 to £4 15/, heavy bulls £6 17/6
