One of the biggest bloodstock sale;-: ever held in the -Dominion was conducted at Alexandra Park, Auckland, yesterday. The leading- bids being, for Gletiora Faik Ully. by General Lattouv Roniica, was purchased for lOHgus by Mr F. Dorset, Wairarapa. Glenora Park filly, by Genera! L vU.ur-Lady Musket at 175gns, went to Mr J. Williamson. An Ascot stud's bay- colt by Elysian Bay-Hester, sold for 37f> gns to Mr T. H. Lowry. Bay filly by Ely-sian-Lady.Gwen, 220gns, to H. S. Wilson. Bay ccR, Elysian-Cyrina, 150gns, and a bay cob by Elysian-Stuvrrewere, lOOgms, were bought by Mr G. L. Stead'. Brown filly, by Pemiry-My Roe, 100 gns, to P. Hall. W. G. GERMAN PRISONERS ALSO ON BOARD. AUCKLAND, Jan. 4. The Navua, from Apia, brought Gau. din, who was sentenced to five years! imprisonment, for acts of "war treason." Other German residents named Claussen and Langen were sentenced to eight months for breach of parole. The former for not returning to his home at night, the latter for visitingone of the island's group without receiving written permission. Colonel Turner, who broke his leg at Samoa, was also a. passenger by the vessel. Major B. Head, Capt. R. Neild, Lieut. A. J. Tole, and twenty-three troopers who acted as guard to the prisoners, but most of.whom, had been invalided home, also returned. BURGLARY AND ASSAULT A SWEDE FOUND DEAD. GISBORNE, Jan. 4. George Baxter, aged 4G, a Swede, was found dead, at Tokemaru Bay, in an hotel, with a wound over his heart. A repeating rifle lay alongside him.
A masked man entered a dwelling at Whataupoko, early this morning, •did nearly strangled Mrs Prince, who was aloin at the time. The man ransacked the house and took fifteen pounds. NEW ZEALAND RECRUITS. DUNEDIN, Jan. 4. The Hon. J. Allen, in the course of an interview' to-day, said it' was intended to have the third anil fourth reinforcements i» camp at Trentham at the same time. ' They should have 3,600 men there before long. Half these reinforcements will leave the Dominion, probably in February, when they leave more men will be recruited to keep the strength up to 3,600. FLAX SWAMP FIRE. CARTERTON. Jan. 4. A second fire in a flax plantation, at Toogood's Longbush mill, near Featherstcne, Wairarapa, happened last evening. Aided by a strong wind the fire soon spread and in a very little time practically the whole 400 acres of flax was destroyed. The Estimated loss will amount, ta £20,000. A GISBORNE FRAUD. GISBORNE, Jan. 4. Frank Mcllloy pleaded guilty to receiving £3OO from Edward Hooper, a law clerk, knowing the same to have | been dishonestly obtained. He was i committed for sentence at Auckland.
