GERMAN MENACE MUST BE KILLED. UNION PREPARING FOR CONQUEST. PRETORIA, Jan. 1. Official.—Although the rebellion has been suppressed it is clear that if the rebel leaders in German South-West Africa succeed.the situation may again be acute. It will be necessary, in view of the danger of invasion, to empl 0 y much larger forces than was at first intended, in order to destroy the enemy and the rebei forces and to prevent the recurrence of the menace to South African peace. The Government is confident that the 'citizens will render in the German South-West African campaign as willing and lowal service as they did with such brilliant success In the suppression of the rebellion. The proclamation calls out the first and second classes of the National Reserve in the Transvaal, except the Rand, and also the North-West Cape. USELESS SACRIFICE, A GERMAN OFFICER'S ADMISSION. (Reed. 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 1. A German officer on the Yser declares that their men are falling in thousands. He is convinced that they can never succeed, but they cannot yield because the morale of the troop? would suffer too much. MISSING AVIATOR SAVED. WELLINGTON. Jan. 1. The Prime Minister has received the following message from the High Commissioner:— LONDON, Jan. 1. Flight Commander Hewlett, was ■icked up by a steam trawler in the \ T orlh Sea. Mr Hewlett, who is a son of Mauioe Hewlett', the novelist, took part in the raid on Cuxhaven, and was fehe only aviator not accounted for. LONDON, Jan. 1. v Hewlett was saved by a trawler, and bnded at Ymiden (Holland). SIX HOURS IN WATER. AMSTERDAM, Jan. 1. A trawler picked up Hewlett near Heligoland, after six hours' immersion. The trawler was unable to port, owing to the storms. SEVERE FIGHTING. AMSTERDAM, Jan. 1. The ( "Ty<n states that especially severe fighting has taken place near Lcmbaerbiyde since Christmas, the Allies making every effort to break through. The British naval guns participated. The sluices at Zeebrugge have been repaired. Submarines are constantly leaving the port.
